Keep Your Home Secure

by  |

Home Security Systems
A burglary happens every 40 seconds in the UK [1] and you are most likely to fall victim of a burglary when you are away from home, when you’re occupying your home but you are busy or asleep, and especially after the festive season when criminals assume your home is full of new, expensive items.

Homes with no security measures are 5 times more likely to be targeted than properties with simple security measures in place[2]. Things such as fully working window locks and strong deadlocks can make a big difference to your home’s security.

Taking a few extra simple steps can help to keep your home safe from burglary;

Measures to take inside your home

  • Lock all doors and windows every time you leave your home, even when you're just out in the garden
  • Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and reach from the letterbox (these could be accessed by a determined thief)
  • Leave radios or lights on in your home to make the property appear occupied – maybe use a timer
  • Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows to avoid temptation for a potential thief
  • Store any high value items such as jewellery , paintings or family heirlooms in a properly fitted safe

Measures to take outside of your home

  • Keep ladders and tools stored away in a locked shed / garage so they cannot be accessed and used to break in your property
  •  Install a visual burglar alarm
  •  Install good outside lighting
  •  Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property
  •  Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition and are in a good  state of repair
  •  Secure bikes at home by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked  shed or garage
  •  Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch scheme
  •  Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property
  •  Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges
